Fans of the early film work of Patrick McGoohan are in for a treat, as two more
of his movies are to be released on DVD, hot on the heels of the recently-released
BRAND (1959). HELL DRIVERS (1957) stars Stanley Baker, and sees McGoohan in
the role of the heavy as he plays "Red" Redman, a brutal and remorseless
foreman for a cut-throat truck company which delivers gravel from a quarry to
a construction company at breakneck speeds. (Incidentally, all of the trucks
are numbered, and McGoohan is Number One!) A great little British movie of the
period, it features a cast that would soon become household names alongside
McGoohan, such as William Hartnell, David McCallum, and, in a small role, Sean
Connery. McGoohan portrays another villain in ALL NIGHT LONG (1961), a contemporary
version of Othello with a jazz theme. McGoohan is drummer Johnny Cousin, the
scheming career-minded Iago chracter, conspiring to remove the confidence of
the other characters to achieve his own ends. The soundtrack of the movie features
such jazz greats as Tubby Hayes, Ray Dempsey and Johnny Dankworth.
The DVD's will both be released on Monday January 26th 2004 by Carlton Video.
HELL DRIVERS is £12.99 (RRP), and ALL NIGHT LONG is £9.99 (RRP)
although they will be cheaper to buy through Amazon and other online companies.
