PORTMEIRION UPDATE - NOVEMBER 2005

PIZZERIA TO BE BUILT

Planning permission is being sought by Portmeirion for the garages behind the Triumphal Arch (pictured below) to be turned into a Pizzeria. As visitors to Portmeirion in the 1970s will recall, the Ship Shop at that time was an Italian restaurant, so we welcome this return to the past. Building is set to commence in March 2006, with it being ready in time for the 2006 summer season.

IMPROVEMENTS TO BATTERY COTTAGE

As part of Portmeirion's 5-year plan of improvements, Battery cottage is being treated to a new coat of paint, repairs to the chimney, and a new kitchen. Battery is also set to become the first cottage to be installed with a dishwasher, with Chantry set to follow. Plans are also in place for a re-organisation of the rooms in Battery over the next 3 years now it has been decided, due to access issues, for the cottage not to be converted into nightly accommodation.

URNS REMOVED FOR REFURBISHMENT

With much of Portmeirion over 50 years old, the sandstone which makes up so much of the village is in need of repair. As part of the above-mentioned 5-year plan, urns which adorn the top of many of the buildings are being removed for refurbishment. The far right urn on the top of Bridge House has become loose over the years and is due to be removed soon, and the centre 2 urns from the top of the Gloriette have already been temporarily removed for repair.
