IN
THE PRISONER: As
well as being the symbol/motif of The Village (McGoohan stated that it was a
good "symbol of progress"), the bicycle can also be seen many times
in Village-based scenes, with several extras riding round The Village on them,
and one of the bicycles is also a permanent resident in The Green Dome (Number
Two's office).
IN
REALITY: The
Penny farthing bicycle was first developed between 1870 and 1878, and became
a very popular mode of transport until 1892 when the safety bicycle, a style
that we all now use, came into production.
